A commercial maize farmer tracks input costs by field plot. Comparing cost-per-hectare across 4 plots revealed that one plot consistently required 30% more fertiliser for the same yield — pointing to a soil pH issue that was corrected with lime treatment.

Why Nigerian Farmers Cannot Scale Without Basic Financial Records
Agriculture is the foundation of the Nigerian economy, yet most farmers operate without any formal financial records. This is not simply an administrative gap — it is a direct barrier to growth. Banks require financial records to evaluate loan applications. Input suppliers extend credit based on documented purchase and payment history.
Seasonal cash flow management is the most critical financial skill in agriculture. A farmer planting in April does not receive income until harvest in September. The entire period between planting and harvest must be financed from reserves, loans, or advance sales agreements. Without a seasonal budget planner that maps out these cash needs in advance, unexpected shortfalls at critical stages of the growing season can result in lost harvests.
